What Good Is Therapy?

We have heard it a lot. What good is therapy? ” I don’t need to talk to anyone. I can handle it myself, I always have. No one will understand. It’s a stupid waste of time to just sit around and talk to someone”. The reasons go on and on about why people choose not to go to a counseling session, either individual or group. Oftentimes, people feel that therapy is just going to someone and telling them about their life. This is a misconception of therapy and how it works.

Therapy is more than just talk. Therapists are trained to teach CBT, EMDR, TRE, and many other techniques that change how a person reacts or interacts. CBT-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, is used in almost all therapy sessions. This type of therapy helps a person to realize behaviors that might be hurting their quality of life. An example would be, someone with ADHD who has always hyper-focused on an activity to the point that it has hurt their relationships and caused other areas of their life to be less productive and enjoyable. There are techniques through behaviors that can redirect our minds in to taking a different route and positively using our focus to create a better outcome.

EMDR Therapists are trained in the ability of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. This type of skill is often used with those who experience PTSD. The correct technique can help work through a trauma and create a new pathway in the brain that causes a different emotional reaction to the memory of the trauma.

TRE is an exercise that can be taught in about 15 minutes. Trauma release exercises allow the body to feel the wide range of sensations associated with the flight or fight response, and then release those sensations. This is sort of like your body having a good scream and then relaxing.

These are just a few ways that a therapist can help to overcome issues. Therapy is more than just talk, pretty cool right? We think so too. So, let’s do it.
